Why is the conversion slow?
It runs on your processor, not on a server. Speed depends on length, resolution and computer performance, and is slower on phones.
Will the video lose quality?
Every conversion re-compresses. With the same resolution and a sensible bitrate you usually cannot tell; lowering the resolution does reduce detail.
