AI video: leading models and the cost of a usable shot

A current video-with-audio leaderboard, text-to-video versus image-to-video, and a budget that includes unsuccessful attempts.

Five seconds of demonstration footage can look excellent. Your advertisement needs the correct product, continuous movement, usable sound and room for a caption. After several rejected attempts, cost per usable shot matters more than the first click's price.

This article combines a 2 October 2026 data snapshot with practical planning. Rankings come from an independent benchmark, not my own comparative test. The accompanying photographs explain preparation and editing; they are not stills attributed to the listed video models.

Which models lead video generation with audio?

Wan 3.0 led AA-Video-T2V v2.0, Overall, With Audio when checked. This category generates video with sound from text. It does not establish the ranking for animating reference images, editing existing footage or silent clips.

Prices are benchmark reference values for the respective configurations; 768p is not equivalent to 1080p. Samples does not mean customers. Verify the provider's resolution and rate before purchasing.

What the statistic cannot tell you

Elo represents relative human preference within the evaluated tasks. Overlapping intervals caution against treating small differences as reliable superiority. The video methodology separates modalities and audio: the leaderboards are not one common scale for every task.

Add requirements that may matter more to your project than overall preference: preserving a logo, a stable face, accurate hand movement, continuity between shots or camera control. A strong fantasy fly-through does not prove product-detail reliability. Use the board to shortlist, then test your scenario.

Text-to-video or image-to-video?

Text-to-video begins with a written brief. It suits exploration when you do not need to preserve a precise existing visual. Leaving more decisions open makes results less predictable. "A luxury coffee advertisement" delegates the product, setting, camera and action to the model.

Image-to-video starts from a reference image. For branded shots, solving the static composition before movement may be more practical. A reference still does not guarantee product or character consistency across every frame. Shape drift may only become visible during playback.

Gemini provides a video-creation interface; check model names, functions and plans against the current offer. A familiar service name and an exact benchmark variant may represent different configurations.

Why video still costs more than a single image

Video requires continuity over time. A defect can emerge halfway through: an object changes shape, motion jumps or audio mismatches. You may pay for attempts that produce nothing usable. Images also need revisions, but many static tasks allow cheaper individual attempts.

There is no universal multiplier such as "video is one hundred times more expensive". Model, duration, resolution, audio and purchasing method all matter. Services may charge credits or seconds, while subscriptions apply their own limits. Distinguish the billing unit from the deliverable you actually need.

An illustrative twenty-second advertisement budget

Assume four usable five-second shots, five attempts per shot and an illustrative rate of $0.20 per generated second. Twenty five-second attempts mean 100 generated seconds and $20, although the finished advertisement lasts twenty seconds. Each accepted shot costs $5 in this scenario.

These are assumptions, not a measured model success rate or a quote. Input images, editing, audio work, captions, taxes and human labour are excluded. Two additional brief changes can matter more than a small price difference between providers.

Brief controllable movement

Specify the main action, camera motion and invariants for each shot. Example prompt for animating your own reference photograph:

A five-second static shot of the desk. The camera does not move. Only the background curtain moves slightly in a draft. Preserve the mug shape, notebook position, lighting and reference colours. No cuts, new objects or text changes.

This is narrower and easier to judge than simultaneously requesting a rotating camera, a new person, spilled coffee and a transforming room. If it fails, the property needing correction is clearer. Divide complex stories into shots and assemble them during editing.

Save money without sacrificing the result

Approve the scenario and static key image first. Test the riskiest movement rather than the easiest scene. Use preview settings to assess direction, but do not assume the final higher-quality output will be identical. Keep the prompt, reference, model and settings for accepted shots.

Set a maximum attempt budget per shot. At that boundary, revise the concept or use another technique. Filming a real phone close-up and generating only the background may cost less. The goal is a reliable deliverable, not making every element generative.

Worked budget: four five-second shots, each with five attempts. The cost covers 100 generated seconds, not only the 20-second final result.

Inspect moving hands, text and product edges frame by frame before publication. Then play the whole piece at normal speed, with and without sound. To improve the reference image first, see AI prompting. The image-generator comparison separates the cost of the still from its animation. Frequently asked questions

Should I immediately subscribe to the winning model?

Check the required variant, export and licence first. A benchmark ranking does not recommend a particular subscription.

Is AI video cheaper than filming?

It can be for some short illustrative shots. Precise products, long continuity or real people require a scoped comparison including revisions.
